SMCM Men’s Basketball Begin Battle of DC/Maryland with Loss

FREDERICK, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team opened action at the Battle of DC/Maryland Friday night (Nov. 15). St. Mary's College (0-3) is still searching for its first win of the 2024-25 season after dropping a 73-57 decision to McDaniel College (2-0).
 
How It Happened
  • Neither side led by more than four points as the first half featured six lead changes and three tied scores. The Seahawks gained a 9-5 lead at 14:39 behind five straight points by junior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern).
  • McDaniel headed into halftime with a 27-23 advantage after the Green Terror closed out the half on a 5-0 push with three points from Jeong Hwang.
  • SMCM started the second half with an 18-10 run to regain a 41-37 margin with 14:09 remaining in the game. First-year guard Tjay Beckles (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) led the way with six points while Koverman and sophomore guard Ree Smith (Baltimore, Md./City College HS) each contributed five.
  • After St. Mary's College worked a six-point deficit down to 49-47 with a Smith layup at 9:45, the Green Terror pulled away with a 22-8 run over a seven-minute span to lead 71-55 with 2:05 left in the game.
 
Inside the Box Score
  • McDaniel had the hot hand in the second half, shooting 76-percent (19-of-25) from the field to down the Seahawks. The Green Terror finished the game shooting 51-percent (26-of-51).
  • SMCM struggled from the three-point line, connecting on just three of 14 attempts.
  • The Green Terror also posted a 36-29 rebounding margin.
 
St. Mary's College Game Notes
  • Koverman finished the night with 16 points shooting 6-of-11 and added a game-best six rebounds plus three assists and one block.
  • Smith contributed nine points while Beckles added eight.
  • First-year forward Yassine Idrissa (Rockville, Md./Wootton) dished out four assists while chipping in three points, three rebounds, one block, and one steal.
 
McDaniel Game Notes
  • Chuck Contee poured in a game-best 26 points plus five rebounds, three assists, and three steals while David Kearney tallied 12 points, four assists, three caroms, one block, and one steal.
