ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Junior midfielder
Jack Nelson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) scored a career-best two goals Saturday night (Nov. 2) to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to a United East Conference Championship Tournament quarterfinal win. Top-seeded St. Mary's College (10-6-2) posted a 3-1 triumph over No. 8 seed Penn State Brandywine (8-8-3) to move on in the playoffs.
The Seahawks will now host No. 4 seed Penn State Harrisburg (14-4-2) in Tuesday's (Nov. 5) semifinal matchup at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. Harrisburg eliminated No. 12 seed Wilson College (7-12), 5-1, in one of the other three quarterfinal contests.
How It Happened
- Brandywine almost claimed an early lead in the third minute as Ethan Faulkner's shot almost crossed the goal line but was knocked away by sophomore defender Ethan Wright (Columbia, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase).
- However, it was SMCM who notched the first lead of the game when Nelson found the back of the net in the 12th minute, putting away a loose ball for a 1-0 lead for the hosts.
- Elijah DeBooth kept the Lions in the game as DeBooth came up with two saves to send his team into halftime just down a goal.
- St. Mary's College doubled its lead in the 53rd minute when Nelson connected for his second of the night.
- Brandywine got one back just two minutes later when Christian Zavala converted a penalty kick into the lower left corner for a 2-1 game.
- The Seahawks tallied an insurance marker in the 77th minute off their seventh corner kick of the game. Senior forward Alex Ochman (Rockville, Md./Wootton) sent in a corner kick from the right corner and sophomore midfielder Bryce Webster (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) backheeled a pass for sophomore forward Lucas Evans (Greenbelt, Md./South River) to finish off.

St. Mary's College
- This was Nelson's first multiple-goal game of his career.
- Senior forward Abdoul Anounkou (Togo/Springbrook [Md.]) led the Seahawks with four shots.
- Sophomore goalie Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) made two saves to move to 4-4 on the season.
Penn State Brandywine
- Faulkner and Omar Simpson paced the Lions with two shots each.
- DeBooth put up six saves.
