Reading, PA- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team (17-10) closed out the regular season with a United East Conference contest against Penn State Berks (7-15). The Seahawks defeated the Lions in five sets.Â

How it Happened

The first set was all Penn State Berks. The Lions raced out to a 1-0 match lead following a 25-13 opening set victory.Â

The Seahawks were able to respond in the second set and tied the match at one a piece. St. Mary's flew out to an 8-2 start after a Margaret McGlothlin service run and held a significant advantage throughout the set. The closest the Lions could catch back up to the Seahawks was a four point deficit. St. Mary's took set two, 25-20.

The third set proved to be incredibly back and forth as both teams went on respective runs. St. Mary's went on a four point run in the middle of the set after kills from Maya Mauro and Arielle Lubeck to build a 19-13 lead. The Lions fought back and eventually cut the Seahawk lead to just one at 24-23. Maya Mauro came through in the clutch and slammed the door closed on Penn State Berks with a set clinching kill. St. Mary's led 2-1 after a 25-23 third set victory.Â

Penn State Berks stormed back in the fourth set and evened the match at 2-2. The Lions were able to score the final three points of the set to force a fifth and final set.Â

The Seahawks led 11-10 in the final set. In an incredibly tense moment, St. Mary's was able to pull through. The Seahawks scored the final four points of the set to win the match, 3-2. Kaleigh Wiseman recorded two kills to close the match and helped propel St. Mary's to victory. Â
