Keegan Preis (Upper Falls, Md./Loyola Blakefield) handed out six assists while sophomore attackman
Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) scored four times in the home- and season-opener for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon (Feb. 10). St. Mary's College (1-0) notched an 18-6 non-conference win over Southern Virginia University (0-1).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead as three different players tallied their first goals of 2024, including first-year Declan Horton (University Park, Md./DeMatha Catholic) finding the back of the net for his first goal as a Seahawk. Michael Brown scored an empty netter from Southern Virginia's defensive end to put the visitors on the scoreboard.
- SMCM found its groove in the second quarter, outscoring the Knights, 6-1, for 9-2 halftime lead. Preis assisted on four of the goals while Martel put three past Southern Virginia's goalie, Jace Lightfoot.
- It was a slow start for St. Mary's College after the break as Lightfoot made five saves, allowing the Knights to close the gap to four (9-5) with three straight goals, including a pair from Gabe King. Horton stopped Southern Virginia's run with his second goal of the day, sparking a 4-0 run for the Seahawks that continued into the fourth frame.
- After Zak Sullivan netted the Knights' sixth and final goal of the game, SMCM finished out the game with five straight, including two from junior midfielder Jake Levey (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge).

- St. Mary's College finished the game with a 64-26 shot advantage as well as a 43-28 ground ball margin behind a team-best six by sophomore Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel).
- Ciccarello won 15-of-27 face-offs in his first career start as the Seahawks ended the afternoon with a 15-of-28 effort at the X.

- Martel kicked off his sophomore campaign with his ninth career hat trick while adding three ground balls.

- Junior midfielder Nate Hochrein (Towson, Md./Towson) collected his first career hat trick as he finished the game with three goals and two ground balls.
- Levey and senior captain Johnny McGrain (Lutherville-Timonium, Md./Dulaney) each added two goals and an assist. Levey also scooped up a career-best three ground balls.
- Junior defensive midfielder Quinnten Hatfield (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) picked up five ground balls and notched a team-best two caused turnovers.
- In his first career start, junior goalie Cullen McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) made a career-high 11 stops and added a ground ball for his second career win.
Southern Virginia Game Notes
- King led the Knights in their season-opening loss with two goals and an assist.
- Jaydon Arnold won 13 face-offs and scooped up a game-best 10 ground balls.
- Lightfoot finished the game with 18 stops and one ground ball.
