ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Juniors
Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and
Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) combined for nine goals as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team played their first home game of 2024 Wednesday evening (Feb. 21). St. Mary's College (0-2) dropped its second straight game, falling 15-13 to Washington College (2-0) in its home-opener at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.
How It Happened
- Washington College jumped out to a 2-0 lead at 9:42 before Horton and Betch scored 54 seconds apart to knot the contest at 2-all at 7:10. Ashley Devlin sent the Shorewomen into the second quarter with a 4-2 advantage with a pair of unassisted goals.
- The second frame saw eleven goals scored with Washington College edging the hosts, 6-5, to stake a 10-7 lead at halftime.
- The Seahawks won the third period, outscoring the visitors, 4-2, to close the gap to 12-11 as four SMCM players found the back of the net.
- A pair of Shorewomen goals in a 39-second span returned them to a three-goal lead (14-11) with 7:31 remaining in the game. The two sides each scored before Betch pulled St. Mary's College within two with an unassisted tally at 1:56.
- The Seahawks won the ensuing draw control and claimed a free-position attempt, but Horton's shot hit the post. Annie Wilson picked up the loose ball, allowing Washington College to clear the ball out of its defensive end and effectively eat up the final minute of play.

- In addition to her five ground balls, Freeman notched three caused turnovers.
- First-year goalie Annie Wise (Canton, Ga./Woodstock) entered the game in the second quarter and made 11 saves over the final 41 minutes of the game as Wise made her collegiate debut.
Washington College Game Notes
- Devlin led the Shorewomen with four goals and tallied her 100th career point with her third score of the game.
- McKenna Seashole was tough to beat in goal as she turned away 13 shots to lead her team to their second straight win.
- St. Mary's College holds a 13-10 lead in the all-time series, but the Shorewomen have won four of the last five.
