CLEARWATER, Fla. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team faced their fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the season Thursday evening (Mar. 14). St. Mary's College (4-4) looked to rally in the second half but dropped an 18-10 non-conference decision to No. 25 Denison University (2-4) at the Philip Jones Field in Clearwater, Fla.
How It Happened
- Denison shut out the Seahawks in the first 18 minutes of the game while putting up seven on the scoreboard to stake a 7-0 lead with 12:02 remaining in the second quarter.
- The first-year duo of Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) and Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex Academy) each notched a goal in a 38-second span to end the scoring drought for SMCM at 9:55. The Big Red responded with a 6-2 run to take a 13-4 advantage into halftime.
- St. Mary's College won the third quarter, 3-1, as midfielders Grace Lintz (Towson, Md./Towson) and Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) and junior attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) each found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 14-7 heading into the fourth frame.
- The Big Red briefly sparked a running clock with a 3-0 start to the fourth but senior captain MC Mortimer (Baltimore, Md./Friends) and Laine quickly halted it with back-to-back goals in a 40-second span to make it 17-9 with 5:30 left in the game.

- First-year Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) made nine saves for SMCM.

- Merrill Rollhaus had a well-rounded game for the Big Red with team-bests of three goals, two assists, and two caused turnovers while adding four draw controls and two ground balls.
- Denison has now won the last two meetings with St. Mary's College.
