NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team took on their third consecutive nationally-ranked opponent Wednesday evening (Mar. 20). St. Mary's College (4-5) suffered its third straight loss in dropping a 20-8 decision to No. 18 Christopher Newport University (7-2).
How It Happened
- Christopher Newport staked a 5-0 lead at 11:52 of the second quarter following a 3-0 first period effort.
- Junior midfielder Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) snapped the Seahawks' nearly 21-minute long scoring drought with back-to-back goals in a 55-second span to pull the visitors within 5-3 at 8:49.
- The Captains notched five of the next six goals in the final 6:11 of the first half to head into the locker room with a 10-3 halftime lead.
- The two sides alternated goals in the third frame with CNU edging St. Mary's College, 4-3, to give them an eight-goal cushion (14-6) going into the fourth.
- After the Seahawks scored two of the first three goals of the fourth, Christopher Newport closed out the game on a 5-0 run. Laine and first-year midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex Academy) each found the back of the net for SMCM in the final quarter of play.

- CNU posted a 31-19 shot margin and gained the advantage in ground balls, 20-12.
- The Captains also controlled the center of the field with an 18-14 margin in draw controls.

- Sophomore attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) contributed two goals and an assist.
- First-years Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) and Annie Wise (Canton, Ga./Woodstock) split equal time in goal and combined for seven saves.

- Kelsey Winters led all point-getters with seven points on four goals and three assists while Julia Iapicca put up a game-best five goals.
- Brookelyn Morrison won 11 draw controls while chipping two scores and three helpers.
