GRANTHAM, Pa. – A career-best six-point performance by junior captain
Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) lifted the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to an upset win Saturday afternoon (Mar. 2). St. Mary's College (3-2) notched its third straight win with a 13-10 road victory over No. 25 Messiah University (0-4).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks netted both goals of the first period as Horton and sophomore attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) gave their team a 2-0 bump in the first 15 minutes.
- Messiah finally put one on the scoreboard 47 seconds into the second quarter. However, SMCM responded by rattling off four straight in three-and-a-half minutes to claim a 6-1 lead at 9:09. Junior attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) led the way with two goals. The Falcons got three back before halftime to head into the locker room down only two scores.
- Messiah's momentum remained at the start of the third as Hannah Gawne found the back of the net to pull her squad within one at 12:36 and cap a 4-0 run. The Seahawks rebuilt a five-goal lead with a 5-1 run over a 12:19 span, taking an 11-6 advantage at 12:59 of the fourth frame.
- The Falcons closed the gap to 11-8 at 9:14 before Horton scored back-to-back unassisted goals, including a woman-down goal, to hand St. Mary's College its final five-goal cushion of the game with 2:48 remaining in the game. The hosts tallied a pair of woman-up goals in a span of 34 seconds to make it a three-goal game with 1:49 left in the game.
- Messiah won the ensuing draw and Gawne fired off a shot, but first-year Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) was up to the task and made the save. Junior midfielder Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) picked up the ground ball after the stop and initiated a successful clear for the Seahawks for the final play of the game.
