Seahawks Baseball Sweeps Penn State Abington in Two Hard Fought Games

St. Mary's City, MD-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Baseball Team (4-9) welcomed the Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington (4-13) for a United East Conference Double Header. The Seahawks took both games, winning the first game 6-5 and the second, 7-6.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • The Seahawks wasted no time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Ian Walters connected on a single through the left side to send home Chase O'Dell from third. 

  • The Nittany Lions responded with a four run second inning to capture their first lead. 

  • The offense woke back up for St. Mary's in the bottom of the fifth. George Berbakos, Chase O'Dell, and Cole Tarleton all reached base with one out to set up Ian Walters at the plate. Walters was able to deliver with a base clearing double that tied the game at four a piece. 

  • Penn State Abington added a run in the top of the eighth to take a one point lead. 

  • With their backs against the wall, the Seahawks were able to deliver. Garrett Pullium, Adrian Auber, and Derrick Booker all reached base, while Eli Shafer pinch ran for Pullium and was able to steal second to help load the bases. Shafter reached home as the tying run after a George Berbakos fielder's choice. Chase O'Dell ended it the next at bat with an RBI single that sent home Myles Pittman from third to win the game.

Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

  • Chase O'Dell contributed three hits and the game winning RBI.

  • Ian Walters had a team best two hits and four RBI's.

  • Tommy Brill pitched seven innings and gave up four earned runs while striking out two. Nick Russo pitched one inning and faced four batters.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • Penn State Abington struck first with a run in the top of the third.

  • St. Mary's answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Chase O'Dell and Nick Malone each picked up an RBI single, while Cole Tarleton earned an RBI double to help the Seahawks take their first lead.

  • The Seahawks kept the momentum going in the bottom of the fifth, adding two more runs. Trevor Smith connected on a  RBI double that sent home Nick Malone. Later on in the inning, Layne Lesko singled down the infield line to St. Mary's their second run of the inning.

  • Two more runs were scored in the bottom of the sixth for the St. Mary's squad. Adrian Auber picked up an RBI on a sac fly. Garrett Pullium added an RBI single for the seventh run of the game for the Seahawks.

  • The Nittany Lions scored five runs over the course of the seventh and eighth inning to cut the St. Mary's lead to just one, but that is as close as they could get. St. Mary's held on to win, 7-6.
