SMCM Women’s Lacrosse Stumbles at No. 5 Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team returned to non-conference action Wednesday evening (April 17). St. Mary's College (8-6) suffered a 15-7 setback at the hands of fifth-ranked Salisbury University (11-3).
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks were the first to find the back of the net as senior captain MC Mortimer (Baltimore, Md./Friends) notched an unassisted goal three minutes into the game. Salisbury responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
 
  • SU started the second period as it had ended the first, scoring three more in a row to claim a 6-1 advantage with 4:34 left in the first half. Junior attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) halted the Sea Gulls' run with a goal with seven seconds to go, making it 6-2 at halftime.
 
  • The two sides alternated the first four goals of the second half, maintaining a four-goal difference. Salisbury increased its lead to 10-5 as Leah Vilov scored with 1:32 left in the third.
 
  • Once again, the two teams traded the first four goals to start the final frame with Betch pulling SMCM within 12-7 with 12:34 remaining in the game. The Sea Gulls closed out the game on a three-goal run for their second straight win.

  • Salisbury outshot the Seahawks, 42-18, and posted a 22-9 margin in ground balls.
  • The Sea Gulls edged St. Mary's College, 14-13, in draw controls.

  • Senior attacker Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) chipped in two assists while sophomore attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) collected a game- and season-best six draw controls.
  • First-year Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) picked up 11 saves as SU snapped the Seahawks' four-game win streak.

  • Mary Hanzsche paced the Sea Gulls with five points on one goal and four assists while Miranda Mears tallied three goals.
