Seahawks Women’s Lacrosse Returning to the United East Championship

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Junior attacker Ella Baynes (Baltimore, Md./Catholic HS) and first-year midfielder Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each scored four times to lead the top-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to a shutout win Wednesday evening (May 1). St. Mary's College (10-6) notched a 23-0 victory over No. 4 seed Cedar Crest College (9-5) in the semifinals of the United East Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.
 
The Seahawks will now host No. 3 seed Wilson College, an 11-8 winner over No. 2 Bryn Athyn College in tonight's other semifinal matchup, on Saturday, May 4, at 4:30 pm in the championship game at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium. SMCM will look to three-peat while Wilson is searching for its first United East championship title after finishing as the runner-up in the Colonial States Athletic Conference in 2021 and 2023.
 
How It Happened
  • St. Mary's College owned a 7-0 lead after the first quarter of play as junior midfielder Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) and sophomore attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each tallied two goals while senior attacker Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) added one score and two assists.
 
  • The Seahawks headed into halftime with a 13-0 advantage as Baynes picked up two of her goals during the second period and Harrison had a goal and an assist.
 
  • SMCM stretched its lead to 19-0 following 45 minutes of action as Baynes and Harrison combined for four of the team's six goals during the third frame.
 
  • First-year attacker Sam Collins (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) scored her first two goals as a Seahawk to help St. Mary's College out the game with a 4-0 push in the final quarter.

  • The Seahawks registered a 47-8 shot margin as well as a 28-5 advantage in ground balls behind a career-best five loose ball pickups by first-year defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson).
  • SMCM also recorded a 21-5 lead in draw controls as Scala won five.

  • Harrison finished with career-highs of four goals, five points, and two ground balls plus one caused turnover.
  • Baynes matched her season-best of four goals while adding a ground ball.
  • Boudreau and senior captain Rachael Freeman (Baltimore, Md./Friends) combined for seven caused turnovers with Boudreau grabbing a career-high four.
  • First-years Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) and Annie Wise (Canton, Ga./Woodstock) combined for four saves in the shutout win with Wise making three in the final 15 minutes.

  • Kayleigh Woomer came up with 16 saves and two grounders.
