SMCM Women’s Lacrosse, Your 2024 United East Champions!

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Back-to-back-to-back! For the third consecutive season, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team has been crowned the United East Conference champions. Top-seeded St. Mary's College (11-6) notched a 20-4 victory over third-seeded Wilson College (9-5) Saturday afternoon (May 4) while junior attacker Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) picked up Tournament MVP honors.
 
The Seahawks lock up the conference's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament with today's victory. The NCAA Women's Lacrosse Selection Committee will announce the NCAA bracket on Monday, May 6, at 10:30 am on ncaa.com.
 
Betch earned MVP honors after tallying six goals and six assists plus six draw controls and one caused turnover over two conference tournament games, including a four-goal, five-assist performance this afternoon. In addition, sophomore attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) registered her 100th career point with her second point of the afternoon. Scala ended the game with a career-best four goals and an assist.
 
How It Happened
  • SMCM rolled out to a 17-0 lead at the 7:10-mark of the third quarter, inducing a running clock following a 10-0 first quarter.
 
  • Sage Lague put Wilson on the scoreboard with a goal and an assist as the Phoenix scored back-to-back goals to avoid the shutout with 3:44 remaining in the third.
 
  • In the fourth frame, each side scored twice.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Seahawks put up a 38-18 shot margin as well as a 23-10 advantage in ground balls.
  • SMCM doubled up the Phoenix, 18-9, in draw controls as first-year defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) matched her career-best of seven draws.
  • Wilson made eight unforced errors as the Phoenix finished the game with 15 turnovers.
 
St. Mary's College Game Notes
  • Seniors Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and MC Mortimer (Baltimore, Md./Friends) each contributed four points on three goals and a helper.
  • Senior captain Rachael Freeman (Baltimore, Md./Friends) led the defensive effort with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • First-years Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) and Annie Wise (Canton, Ga./Woodstock) combined for seven saves with Greeley making four and adding a caused turnover in 37:44.
 
Wilson Game Notes
  • Lague ended the afternoon with two goals and one dime while Jill Ahlgren chipped in four ground balls, three caused turnovers, one draw control and one assist.
  • Kaelyn Goff made seven stops in 45 minutes of relief.
