LANCASTER, Pa. – Junior attacker
Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) dropped seven goals to propel the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team to a victory in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament Saturday afternoon (May 11).
St. Mary's College (12-6) earned a 16-1 win over Grove City College (15-6) in Shadek Stadium on the campus of Franklin & Marshall College to continue its NCAA Tournament journey.
The Seahawks will now face host F&M (16-3) tomorrow, Sunday, May 12, at 3 pm in second-round action. SMCM will look to avenge a 20-10 regular-season loss from March 12 when they face the third-ranked Diplomats.
How It Happened
- Betch scored four of the team's first five goals, including three in a row to start the game, as St. Mary's College rolled out to a 5-0 lead with 5:43 remaining in the first quarter.
- The Seahawks were held to just two scores from first-year midfielders Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) and Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) in the second period and headed into halftime with a 7-0 advantage.
- Grove City got on the scoreboard with the first goal of the second half as Taylor Blythe netted a woman-down goal midway through the third frame. Betch responded for SMCM with a woman-up goal and a woman-down goal in the span of 1:54 minutes, sparking a 9-0 run to end the game.

- St. Mary's College posted a 43-14 shot advantage as well as a 22-17 margin in ground balls.
- The Seahawks also picked up a 12-7 edge in draw controls as senior attacker Bella Dunigan (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) won a game- and season-best six draws.
- SMCM caused 14 of the Wolverines' 26 turnovers as senior captain Rachael Freeman (Baltimore, Md./Friends) anchored the defense with a game- and season-best four caused turnovers plus four ground balls.
- Grove City had few offensive possessions as the Wolverines failed nine times to clear the ball in 29 attempts and struggled to hold onto the ball.

- Elling and sophomore attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each contributed two goals and an assist while Dunigan finished with three helpers.
- First-year Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) made four saves and scooped up two grounders in 53 minutes as St. Mary's College won its fourth straight game.
Grove City Game Notes
- Abby Roetering picked up a game-high five ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead the Wolverines defensively.
- Elyse Kiggins finished the game with 13 saves and four grounders.
