St. Mary's City, MD- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Volleyball team (7-6) hosted Salisbury University (10-2) and Hollins College (2-12) for the SMCM Tri-Match. The Seahawks fell to Salisbury in three sets, but bounced back with a three set sweep of Hollins.Â

How it Happened

Salisbury controlled much of the first set and cruised to a 25-11 victory.Â

St. Mary's once again found themselves in a hole, trailing 11-5 in the second set. Despite the slow start, the Seahawk squad began to find their rhythm and tied the game at 12 following two Elizabeth Childs service aces and a Gracie Zartman kill. St. Mary's and Salisbury went back and forth for the remainder of the set. Down 24-23, the Seahawks scored three straight points, emphasized with a Maya Mauro kill, to end the set and tie the match at 1-1.Â

Salsibury once again jumped out in front of St. Mary's, taking a 10-2 lead in the third set. Much like the second set, the Seahawks had an answer and trimmed the Seagull lead to just one at 13-12.Grace Gilmore came up big for the Seahawks over that stretch, coming up with big kills when they needed them most. Salisbury and St. Mary's traded runs for the remainder of the set, which led to a 22-21 Seagull lead. Unfortunately for St. Mary's, this time, Salisbury was the one to end the set on three straight points. The Seagulls led the match 2-1.Â

The Seahawks and Seagulls traded points to begin the fourth set, which led to a 12-12 tie. From that point, Salisbury gained control and was able to maintain a consistent lead over St. Mary's. The Seahawks continued to apply pressure to the Seagulls, but Salisbury ultimately made the plays at the end of the set to win 25-20. Salisbury took the match, 3-1.

St. Mary's dominated the first set, winning 25-9. The Seahawks scored 12 unanswered points in the middle of the set. Elizabeth Childs went on an 11 point service run that featured three service aces. Julia Bobrowski picked up two kills during that run as well.Â

Hollins began to find a groove in the second set and pushed the Seahawks to an 11-11 tie in the middle of the set. St. Mary's was finally able to distance themselves from Hollins after four unanswered points on an Ellie Matthews service run. Faith Shockley picked up two kills during that run and the Seahawks closed out Hollins 25-16 to end the set.Â

The Seahawks started fast in the fourth set and built a 9-2 lead. Despite the strong start, St. Mary's errors allowed for Hollins to come back and tie the set at 11. After some back and forth play, St. Mary's finally began to regain control thanks to a couple of Julia Bobrowski kills. Alex Williams scored the game winning kill in the set. The Seahawks earned a 25-18 third set victory, taking the match 3-0.Â
