St. Mary’s College Men’s Basketball Bounces Back with Dominant Win

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team snapped a two-game skid Wednesday night (Jan. 22) as three Seahawks each tallied 19 points. St. Mary's College (10-9, 6-4 UEC) completed the season series sweep of Gallaudet University (2-15, 2-7 UEC) with an 81-58 United East Conference victory.
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks never trailed as they opened the game on a 9-0 run before Blessed Mbogo put the visitors on the board with one of two free throws at 15:18. SMCM continued to fly past the Bison, establishing its biggest lead of the first half at 7:46 with a 24-6 advantage.
  • Gallaudet capitalized on a stretch of eight Seahawk turnovers to trim the 18-point deficit down to seven, using a 19-8 run to close out the half and head into halftime down only 32-25.
  • The Bison persisted in picking at St. Mary's College's lead at the beginning of the second half, pulling within 41-37 at 14:36 on a two-point bucket by Brandon Washington.
  • The Seahawks blew the game wide open with a 24-9 run over an eight-minute span to boast a 65-46 lead at 6:49, never looking back in rolling to a 23-point victory.

  • SMCM shot a season second-best 56.9-percent from the field, including a season third-best 45-percent from downtown.
  • St. Mary's College connected on 14-of-17 free throws for a season third-best 82.4-percent from the charity stripe.
  • The Seahawks assisted on 19 of 29 field goals made while registering 10 blocks for a third time this season.

  • Junior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern) and first-years Tjay Beckles (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) and Yassine Idrissa (Rockville, Md./Wootton) each notched 19 points.
  • Idrissa came alive in the second half, scoring 17 of his 19 points, while posting game-bests of eight rebounds and seven blocks plus a career-best two steals.
  • Koverman drained a career-best five three-pointers on his way to 19 points.
  • In addition to his 19 points, Beckles picked a career-high three pockets.
 
Gallaudet Game Notes
  • Alex Ortman led all scorers with 22 while Brandon Chung chipped in 11 in the Bison's second straight loss.
