ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Chris Harney '97, head coach of the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team, picked up his 300th career victory Wednesday night (Jan. 8). St. Mary's College (8-7, 4-2 UEC) turned a 21-17 deficit into a 64-45 United East Conference victory over Rosemont College (3-11, 2-4 UEC), snapping a two-game skid.
Having spent his entire collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Harney now boasts a 20-year career record of 300-206 for a .593-win percentage. He has led the Seahawks to five NCAA Division III Tournament appearances, advancing as far as the Elite Eight in 2011 and 2013, four conference tournament championship titles, and six conference regular-season championship titles.
How It Happened
- SMCM opened the game with a 5-0 lead before stretching it to a 10-4 advantage at 10:18 on a junior captain JD Salo (Dunkirk, Md./Northern) bucket.
- Rosemont responded with a 10-1 run over the next three minutes to claim its first lead of the game, taking a 14-11 lead behind four points from Bruce Black.
- First-year guard Tjay Beckles (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) hit a three-pointer in the final 30 seconds of the half to pull St. Mary's College within one and the Ravens staked a 21-20 margin at halftime.
- Beckles helped the Seahawks regain the lead for good at 17:58 of the second half, sparking a 26-6 run which gave the hosts a 49-28 margin with 7:39 remaining in the game.
