St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's volleyball team put together one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season on Wednesday night, sweeping Penn State Abington, 3–0 (25–17, 25–15, 25–17), inside the Michael P. O'Brien Athletics & Recreation Center Arena.
With the victory, the Seahawks improved to 8–10 overall and 2–1 in United East play, while the Nittany Lions fell to 9–6 (2–2 United East).
The Seahawks hit an impressive .302 as a team, led by Erianna Mendieta's 15 kills on a .385 hitting percentage. Maya Mauro followed closely with 13 kills and two service aces, while Faith Shockley added seven kills at a .417 clip.
Setter Camilla Galeano ran the offense masterfully, dishing out 17 assists, tallying six digs, and adding an ace. Lauren Panageotou also chipped in 19 assists and a service ace, giving the Seahawks a balanced attack that kept Penn State Abington off rhythm all night.
Defensively, St. Mary's was anchored by Elizabeth Childs, who posted a team-high 14 digs, while Mendieta added 14 and Mauro contributed seven. The Seahawks limited the Nittany Lions to just a .103 hitting percentage and out-dug the visitors 54–39.
St. Mary's controlled each set from start to finish, using strong serving runs and efficient side-out play to seal the sweep in just over an hour of play.
The Seahawks will now hit the road to face Rowan University this Friday at 7:00 p.m. in non-conference action as they look to build on their momentum heading into the heart of the season.
