CARLISLE, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team battled from start to finish Wednesday afternoon (Nov. 12) in the First Round of the 2025 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament. St. Mary's College (13-6) tied up the game early in the third period before falling 3-1 to No. 11 Dickinson College (19-3).
The Seahawks finished the 2025 campaign with 13 wins, marking the fourth time in the last five seasons of achieving double-digit victories.
How It Happened
- SMCM attacked early with senior forward Briana Allen (Bowie, Md./Mount de Sales) testing Taylor Morrow in the third minute. Seniors Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Elena Pasko (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Allen then peppered Morrow with three shots in a row in the eighth minute.
- Dickinson also took a crack at sophomore goalie Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) in the first period with Gillian Rosenstock and Nicole Uebele each putting an attempt on goal in the first 10 minutes.
- Both goalies were up to the challenge and the teams headed into the second quarter in a scoreless draw.
- The scoreless tie held until 24:38 when Uebele reverse swept the ball past a diving Kent into the lower right corner, giving the Red Devils a 1-0 lead which lasted through halftime.
- Senior forward Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) put St. Mary's College on the board four minutes into the third frame with a beautiful goal into the top right corner. Ziegler received the ball just above the 50-yard line and dribbled down the right side before splitting two Dickinson defenders as she stepped into the circle and lifted the ball with a reverse sweep for the game-tying goal at 34:22.
- Dickinson broke the 1-1 draw early in the fourth period when Megan McClure flicked a pass from Natalie Slusser into the top right corner just inside the near post at 48:21.
- The Red Devils doubled their lead with 5:36 remaining in the game as Uebele struck again, this time finding the lower left corner as Slusser assisted on the goal.
