Shenandoah Nips St. Mary’s College Women’s Lacrosse in Overtime

WINCHESTER, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team opened the 2025 campaign with a tough overtime road loss Saturday afternoon (Feb. 15). St. Mary's College (0-1) dropped a 15-14 overtime decision to Shenandoah University (1-0) as Ayla Jantz netted the game-winning goal just over two minutes into overtime.

How It Happened
  • Senior captain Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) notched a goal and an assist in a span of 29 seconds to help the Seahawks knot the game at 14-14 with 1:11 remaining in regulation. First-year defender Ella Mathias (Annandale, Va./W.T. Woodson) won the ensuing draw control, but Shenandoah's Alex Ripkin caused a turnover to give the Hornets one last possession in the final minute.
  • After SU's timeout, Ripkin fired off a shot which was saved by sophomore Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace), sending the game into overtime.
  • SMCM began the extra frame with possession as Shenandoah picked up a one-minute green card at the end of regulation and started the OT down a player. St. Mary's College generated two shots within the first 80 seconds of the overtime, with one going wide and the other being saved by Maddie Gaboury.
  • Following a Hornet timeout and a good clear by SU, Jantz found the back of the net for the win.

  • St. Mary's College outscored the hosts, 3-2, in the fourth to force overtime.
