Seahawks Women’s Lacrosse Tripped Up by No. 15 Christopher Newport

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team suffered another tough setback Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) in their first game at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium this season. St. Mary's College (0-2) fell 11-9 to No. 15 Christopher Newport University (2-0) as the visiting Captains used a 4-0 to close out the game.
 
How It Happened
  • CNU scored the game's opening goal, but the Seahawks responded with three straight, including two from senior captain Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), to stake a two-goal lead at 10:22. Christopher Newport notched the next four goals, including a pair of woman-up goals, to reclaim the lead at 4:05. Betch found the back of the net once again with an unassisted woman-up goal in the final minute of the first quarter, pulling SMCM within 5-4.
  • In the second period, each side put the ball in back of the goal twice and the Captains headed into halftime with a 7-6 edge.
  • St. Mary's College stretched its 2-0 push that ended the first half into a 5-0 run, retaking the lead and leading 9-7 with 12:55 left in the game as senior captain Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) fueled the run with three goals.
  • The visitors netted four unanswered goals over the final 12 minutes with two of those scores resulting from Seahawk turnovers. CNU knotted the game at 9-9 with 7:34 remaining in the game before going in front for the third time this game, 10-9, at 6:21. The Captains tacked on their final goal with 1:31 to go.
  • SMCM fired off four shots (two on target) but also turned the ball over four times in those final 12 minutes.

  • The Seahawks posted a 15-8 advantage in draw controls as Betch finished with a game- and season-best six draws.
  • Christopher edged the hosts, 28-25, in shots and dominated the ground balls by a 21-11 margin.
 
St. Mary's College Game Notes
  • Along with her six draws, Betch led St. Mary's College with four goals and an assist.
  • Horton finished the game with three goals and a Seahawk- and game-best two caused turnovers.
  • Junior Isabel Gautreaux (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) collected season-highs of eight saves and two ground balls in 49:05 of relief.
 
Christopher Newport Game Notes
  • The Captains entered the game ranked 15th in the first Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll (Feb. 10).
  • Four CNU players tallied two goals each with Faith O'Connor finishing with a team-best four points on two goals and two assists.
  • Hadley Chadwick improved to 2-0 on the season as Chadwick made seven stops.
