ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Guards
Kyree Smith (Baltimore, Md./City) and
James Crimaudo (Riva, Md./South River) each tallied 20-plus points Wednesday night (Feb. 20), but the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team saw its 2024-25 campaign come to an end.
Fifth-seeded St. Mary's College (14-12) dropped a 94-85 decision to 12th-seeded Penn College (9-17) in the first round of the 2025 United East Conference Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
The Seahawks wrap up this year's campaign with a 14-12 overall record, including a 10-6 mark in United East action. SMCM finished with double-digit conference wins for the first since a 12-4 log in 2021-22 while registering a second straight winning season.
How It Happened
- St. Mary's College went down 7-2 in the first five minutes of the game but worked its way back to a 9-9 draw at 14:20 on a two-point bucket by first-year guard Tjay Beckles (Baltimore, Md./Overlea).
- The Seahawks never claimed a lead in the game but stayed close, pulling within 22-21 with eight minutes left thanks to a Smith layup. Penn College pulled away with a 25-16 run to close out the half and stake a 47-37 halftime advantage.
- The Wildcats doubled their lead with a 28-18 run at the start of the second half, taking a 75-55 at 8:50 for their biggest lead of the game.
- SMCM found its sense of urgency and clawed its way back into the game, whittling down its down to 83-76 with 1:26 left in regulation. Junior captain Jake Koverman (Severna Park, Md./Southern) and Smith combined for 15 points in the team's 21-8 run to put the game in reach.
- Penn College went 11-for-14 at the free throw line, including a perfect 10-for-10 by Gavin Barrett, over the final 1:25 of the game to seal the win.

- St. Mary's College finished the game shooting 43.7-percent (31-71) from the field and 73.9-percent (17-23) from the charity stripe.
- The Wildcats posted a +14-rebounding margin (40-26) and made 59.6-percent of their shots.

- Crimaudo contributed 20 points and a team-high seven boards while first-year forward Yassine Idrissa (Rockville, Md./Wootton) notched 16 points, a Seahawk-best seven boards, a career-high three steals, and two assists.
- Koverman was the fourth Seahawk to score in double digits, chipping in 13 points and two caroms.
Penn College Game Notes
- Barrett also notched a game-best 27 points while dishing out six dimes and grabbing five rebounds.
- Livingston Cross collected his Division III-leading 22nd double-double with 24 points and game-high 15 rebounds.
