Seahawks Baseball Earns Doubleheader Sweep of Valley Forge

Phoenixville, PA-- The St. Mary's College of Maryland Baseball Team (3-9, 3-1 UEC) marched on with United East play taking on the Valley Forge Patriots (6-13, 0-4 UEC). The Seahawks completed the sweep of the Patriots, winning game one 21-12 and taking game two 8-6.

How It Happened (Game 1)

  • St. Mary's started the game hot, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Ian Walters ripped a triple to score three runners. Rhett Fletcher connected on an RBI single the next at bat to give the Seahawks the lead out of the gate. 

  • Valley Forge took a 7-4 lead after two big innings in the bottom of the second and third. 

  • The Seahawks got back to within one run after back-to-back one-run innings in the top of the fourth and fifth innings. Aaron Wathen connected on an RBI single in the top of the fourth, while Ian Walters sent home George Berbakos in the top of fifth on an RBI single. 

  • The Patriots answered right back with a four-run bottom of the fifth to take an 11-6 lead. 

  • St. Mary's chipped away at the Patriot lead in the top of the seventh inning. George Berbakos scored from second on a Trevor Smith ground out. Layne Lesko delivered the Seahawks their 8th run on an RBI single. The next at bat, Aaron Wathen doubled to score two runners to once again get the Seahawks back to within one. 

  • The Seahawks broke the game wide open with an 11-run top of the eighth to take a 21-11 lead. Corey Brown hit a grand slam to get the scoring started for the Seahawks. From there, Cole Tarleton delivered another two runs on an RBI double. Ian Walters added an RBI as well. St. Mary's scored another four runs on Patriot errors. 

Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

  • Aaron Wathen and Rhett Fletcher led the way with four hits each. 

  • Ian Walters finished the game with five RBIs 

  • The Seahawks finished with 22 hits as a team. 

  • Nick Russo earned the win, pitching four and two thirds innings of relief for the Seahawks. Russo allowed just one run on two hits in collecting his first win of the season.

How It Happened (Game 2)

  • Valley Forge jumped on St. Mary's early, claiming a 4-0 lead after two innings. 

  • The Seahawks responded with a three-run top of the third. George Berbakos connected on a triple that scored Avery Sims, Cole Tarleton, and Layne Lesko. That at bat put St. Mary's back within one of the Patriots. 

  • St. Mary's scored another three runs in the top of the sixth to claim a 6-4 lead. George Berbakos knocked in another run for the Seahawks. Trevor Smith and George Berbakos went on to score later on in the inning as well. 

  • Valley Forge added one run in the bottom of the eighth to make it 6-5. 

  • St. Mary's added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth courtesy of a Cole Tarleton RBI single and a Kyle Catanzaro hit by pitch.  

  • The Patriots added one more run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Seahawks slammed the door shut and went on to win 8-6. 

Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

  • George Berbakos finished the game with three hits and four RBI's

  • Layne Lesko recorded two hits. 

  • Ryder Chalk pitched eight innings and faced 37 batters. Chalk struck out three in improving to 2-1 on the season.

  • Jordan Bonhoff pitched an inning and faced five batters, giving up one earned run in recording his first save as a Seahawk.
