GRANTHAM, Pa. – Seniors
Ella Baynes (Baltimore, Md./Catholic HS) and
Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) each scored three times to lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team against No. 25 Messiah University Saturday afternoon (Mar. 22). St. Mary's College (2-6) dropped a 16-9 non-conference decision to the host Falcons for their second straight loss.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks and Messiah alternated the first four goals, and the game was knotted at 2-2 with 4:53 left in the first quarter. Senior captain Hailey Betch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and Horton then scored four minutes apart to give SMCM a 4-2 lead heading into the second period.
- St. Mary's College gained a three-goal lead at the 11-minute mark on an unassisted tally by Horton for a 7-4 margin. Fifty seconds later, the Falcons made it 6-4 but Baynes returned the Seahawks' three-goal advantage at 9:31.
- Messiah put together a 6-0 run over the next 20 minutes, claiming its first lead of the game at the 4:03-minute mark of the third frame and boasting a 10-7 advantage with 1:32 remaining in the third. The Falcons hit a speed bump when sophomore attacker Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire) found the back of the net with 24 seconds to go before the fourth period to stop the hosts' run.
- The Falcons opened the fourth stanza with six straight over a 12-minute span to gain a 16-8 with 1:59 left in the game.

- Messiah outshot the Seahawks 39-24 (25-17 shots on goal) while posting a +6-turnover margin (13-19) as the Falcons forced 11 of the visitors' 19 turnovers. Messiah also posted a 25-15 margin in ground balls.
- SMCM continued its dominance at the center of the circle, notching an 18-10 margin in draw controls.
- St. Mary's College was limited to one free-position goal on seven attempts.

- Sophomore defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) matched her career-best of 10 draw controls.
- Junior defender Carsyn Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) scooped up three ground balls to lead the Seahawk defense.
- Junior Isabel Gautreaux (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) made 10 saves and picked up two loose balls in 44:19 minutes.
Messiah Game Notes
- Hayley Lettinga and Jordan Lewicki each tallied four goals while Grace Pettit put up seven points on three goals and four assists.
- Grace Hejeebu turned away nine Seahawk shots in the Falcons' second straight win.
