SMCM Women’s Lacrosse Back in Win Column

CHESTER, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team snapped their two-game skid Saturday afternoon (March 29) with a non-conference road victory. St. Mary's College (3-6) posted a 14-8 triumph over Widener University as senior captain Colin Horton (University Park, Md./Elizabeth Seton) led the way with a game-best five goals.
 
How It Happened
  • Widener opened the scoring halfway through the first quarter before Horton and sophomore midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) gave the Seahawks their first lead of the game, 2-1 at 3:32. Jordyn Edwards scored with 55 seconds left in the first for a 2-2 draw.
  • Elling, Horton, and senior captain Madison Laine (Kingsville, Md./Mercy) all found the back of the net within the first nine minutes of the second period for a 5-2 SMCM lead with 5:55 to go in the half. The Pride outscored the visitors, 3-1, over the final minutes to trim the St. Mary's College advantage to 6-5 at halftime.
  • The Seahawks took control of the game in the third frame with a five-goal performance while limiting Widener to just one goal on five shots. Horton notched two goals, and Laine added a goal and an assist as SMCM carried an 11-6 lead into the final quarter of play.
  • WU pulled within four with a woman-up goal to begin the fourth, but St. Mary's College closed out the game with a 3-1 run to seal its third win of the season.

  • The Seahawks outshot Widener, 31-27 (16-10 on goal), while posting a +3-turnover margin as SMCM caused 10 of the Pride's 14 turnovers.

  • Junior Isabel Gautreaux (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) made seven saves and picked up two loose balls.
 
Widener Game Notes
  • Three different Widener players scored two goals each.
  • Regan Polacek turned away six Seahawk shots and picked up five ground balls as the Pride had their three-game win streak snapped.
