SMCM Women’s Lacrosse Flies Past Wilson

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team remained undefeated in United East Conference action with a dominant win Tuesday evening (April 8). St. Mary's College (5-7, 2-0 UEC) notched a 22-4 victory over Wilson College (1-10, 0-1 UEC) to improve to 2-0 in league play.
 
How It Happened
  • Paige Ney knotted the game at 1-1 with 8:14 remaining in the first quarter and then pulled the Phoenix within 4-2 with 3:56 to go in the first. Wilson would get no closer as the Seahawks put distance between themselves and the visitors with a 7-0 run to stake an 11-2 lead halfway through the second period.
  • After leading 13-3 at halftime, SMCM outscored the Phoenix, 9-1, to lock up the win.

  • St. Mary's College posted a 44-5 (31-3 on goal) shot advantage while enjoying a +17-turnover margin (17-34) as the Seahawk defense caused 20 of Wilson's 34 miscues.

  • Sophomore attacker Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire) contributed career-bests of two goals and three assists plus one ground ball and one draw control.
  • Defenders Kayla Kopf (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Carsyn Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) each scooped up four ground balls while Smith, junior attacker Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), and sophomore defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) each earned four draws.

  • Ney led the Phoenix with two goals while Kaelynn Goff made 14 stops.
