LANGHORNE, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball team stepped back into United East Conference play Wednesday afternoon (Jan. 7). St. Mary's College (5-7, 1-1 UEC) dropped its first league game of the season, falling 90-66 to Cairn University (11-4, 3-0 UEC).
How It Happened
- The first half featured seven lead changes and two tied scores as neither team led by more than four points at any given point during the first 13 minutes of the game.
- The biggest lead owned by the Seahawks was a four-point margin four times, including a 19-15 advantage at 12:56 following two free throws by senior captain JD Salo (Dunkirk, Md./Northern).
- SMCM's last lead of the game was 22-21 at 9:53 behind a jumper by junior guard Ben Kobil (Washington, D.C./Jackson-Reed). First-year forward Evan Quintero (Fallston, Md./Gilman) then knotted the game at 24-all before Kobil pulled St. Mary's College within one at 7:04.
- Cairn separated themselves from the visitors by closing out the half with a 22-8 run to carry a 48-33 lead into halftime.
- The Highlanders used an 11-5 push to open a 20-point margin within the first four minutes of the second half.
- The Seahawks trimmed Cairn's lead down into the teens multiple times throughout the stanza, including using an 11-5 spurt over a four-minute span to make it 77-58 with 5:19 to go.
