SMCM Men’s Soccer, Penn College Play to Scoreless Draw on Senior Day

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team (6-8-1, 3-2-1 UEC) and Penn College (8-4-4, 5-1-1 UEC) played to a scoreless draw Saturday evening (Oct. 17) in United East Conference action.

Prior to the game, St. Mary's College honored its 12 seniors for their years of dedication and service.

How It Happened
  • St. Mary's College outshot the Wildcats, 10-3, in the first half but only landed two on goal. Forwards Franco Reyes (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and Nick Haney (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) tested Justin Crismale early in the first three minutes of the game.
  • Diego Diaz had Penn College's lone genuine attempt in the seventh minute, forcing senior Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) to dive to his right to make the save.
  • The Seahawks owned a 9-6 edge in second half shots with Crismale needing to make four saves to keep his team in contention. SMCM seemed to have garnered a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute but an offside call negated the goal. Additionally, senior midfielder Bryce Webster's (Saint Leonard, Md./Calvert) shot hit the crossbar in the 56th minute.
  • None of the Wildcat shots found the target over the final 45 minutes.

Inside the Box Score
  • St. Mary's College posted a 19-9 shot advantage, including a 6-1 margin in shots on goal.
  • The Seahawks also managed a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

St. Mary's College
  • Junior midfielder Zach Blaum (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) paced SMCM with five shots (one on goal).
  • Reed and senior Jordon Eckman (Fallston, Md./Loyola Blakefield) combined for the team's fifth clean sheet of the season with Eckman making one stop in the second half.
