ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Senior forward
Emma Mastrangelo's (Riverton, N.J./Cinnaminson) first career multi-goal game came at the right time Saturday afternoon (Oct. 17) to lift the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team to the win. St. Mary's College (7-6, 3-1 UEC) posted a 2-1 victory over United East Conference newcomer, Immaculata University (4-10, 1-3 UEC), behind two Mastrangelo goals.
Prior to the start of the game, the Seahawks honored their seven seniors for their years of dedication and leadership – Mastrangelo, midfielder
Tori Hampton (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), goalkeeper
Caroline McDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora), midfielder
Kat O'Brien (Severn, Md./Mount de Sales), forward
Alyssa Riggleman (Sudlersville, Md./Queen Anne's County), defender
Safi Stimely (Linthicum, Md./Broadneck), and defender
Abi Wise (Crisfield, Md./Crisfield).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks earned two penalty corners and generated two shots in the first quarter but were unable to put one past Mackenzie Schrack, who turned away a shot by Hampton at 5:06.
- SMCM broke through first in the second period as sophomore forward Morgan Knott (Denton, Md./North Caroline) gave a short flat pass to Mastrangelo, who finished into the lower left corner for the 1-0 hometown lead at 22:10. That one-goal advantage carried on through halftime and the entirety of the third stanza.
- Sixty-eight seconds into the final frame, Alexis Andrada leveled up the contest as Andrada received a pass from Maria Berenato in the middle of the circle and then spun to her left and fired into the middle of the goal at 46:08.
- Mastrangelo struck again nine minutes later as she deflected in sophomore forward Josie Mascolo's (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) shot off the Seahawks' penalty corner for the eventual game-winner at 55:21.
