LATHAM, N.Y. – Junior Stella Marrero (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Christian Life) grabbed United East Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for women's volleyball as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon (Oct. 5). This is Marrero's second career Defensive Player of the Week award.
 
The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's volleyball team notched a perfect 3-0 record last week as St. Mary's College swept Regent University (Sept. 28), posted a 3-1 victory over Lancaster Bible College (Sept. 30), and then outlasted McDaniel College, 3-2 (Oct. 2).
 
The 5-7 defensive specialist racked up 53 digs, 16 assists, nine kills, four service aces, and two block assists over 12 sets.
 
Marrero opened the week with 18 digs at Regent before adding 16 digs and eight assists against conference foe, Lancaster Bible. With the Seahawks short-staffed against McDaniel, she stepped in at outside hitter and recorded 19 digs while adding career-highs of nine kills and 11 points as SMCM rallied for the five-set victory.
 
She currently ranks third in the United East with 210 digs and eighth with 3.44 digs per set.
 
St. Mary's College (11-5, 2-0 UEC) will be back in action tomorrow, October 6, when the Seahawks travel to Reading, Pa., to take on Penn State Berks (7-8, 2-1 UEC) in conference action at 6 pm.
