Harrison Leads Seahawks Women’s Lacrosse at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Junior midfielder Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) put up career-bests of four goals and five points in leading the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team Wednesday evening (Feb. 18). St. Mary's College (0-2) dropped a heartbreaking 9-8 overtime decision at the University of Lynchburg (3-0) as the Hornets' McKenna Steinau notched the game-winning goal with 3:28 left in OT.
 
How It Happened
  • Lynchburg scored the first goal of the game, but the Seahawks rattled off three straight, including back-to-back Harrison goals, to stake a 3-1 lead with 14:31 remaining in the second frame.
  • The Hornets responded with a 3-0 run of their own to post a 4-3 margin with 1:51 left until halftime. The two sides headed into the 10-minute break in a 4-4 draw as junior midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) found the back of the net with 59 seconds to go.
  • SMCM tallied a four-goal third quarter as Elling scored her second of the game and Harrison tacked on two more to double up the hosts, 8-4, through the first three periods.
  • The tables turned in the fourth stanza as Lynchburg strung together four unanswered goals, including scoring with 34 ticks on clock, for the game's fourth tied score, forcing an extra five minutes and setting up Steinau's heroics.
  • Steinau netted the game-winning goal off a free-position shot.

  • St. Mary's College claimed a 14-12 advantage in ground balls as junior goalie Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) led the way with a career-best three loose ball pickups.
  • Lynchburg outshot the Seahawks, 30-22, while posting a +3-turnover margin (10-13).
  • The Hornets gained an 11-8 edge in draw controls.
  • Both teams were 2-of-6 on free-position shots.

  • Senior captain Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and sophomore Ella Mathais (Annandale, Va./Woodson) contributed to the defensive effort with two caused turnovers and two ground balls each.
  • Greeley turned away nine Hornet shots.
 
Lynchburg Game Notes
  • Steinau and Sydney Dumas helped the Hornets remain undefeated on the young season with four goals each. In goal, Olivia Ownings made four saves.
