SMCM Women’s Lacrosse Stumbles at Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team traveled south to Newport News Saturday (Feb. 28) to take on Christopher Newport University. St. Mary's College (0-4) fell 24-5 to the host Captains (3-0).
 
How It Happened
  • CNU opened the game with a 5-0 run before senior captain Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) scored a woman-up goal off an assist from sophomore attacker Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) at 8:48.
  • Christopher Newport closed out the first quarter with another five goals for a 10-1 lead.
  • Jaffurs assisted on junior attacker Taylor Wysokinski's (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) 28 seconds into the second period. The Captains carried a 15-2 lead into halftime.
  • CNU outscored the Seahawks, 6-1, in the third frame with junior midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) notching an unassisted at 12:25 for SMCM's lone goal in the quarter.
  • Juniors Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) and Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire Academy) both found the back of the net in the fourth for the 24-5 final.

  • Christopher Newport outshot St. Mary's College, 32-10, while posting a +8-turnover margin (7-15).
  • The Captains notched a 12-6 margin in ground balls and a 19-12 edge in draw controls.
