ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – First-year Head Coach
Madison Heck earned her first win as the head coach of the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon (Mar. 7). St. Mary's College (1-4) posted a 9-6 win over Stevenson University (2-4) for the team's first win of the season and the first of Heck's tenure.
How It Happened
- The Seahawks went up 2-0 with 8:27 to go in the first quarter behind a goal and an assist from junior midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex). Stevenson scored two of the next three goals to start the second period down only 3-2.
- Only one goal was tallied in the second stanza, and it came off the stick of Alice Petersen, sending the two teams into halftime tied at 3-3.
- SMCM opened the second half with three unanswered goals senior captains Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) and junior attacker Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire Academy) found the back of the net for a 6-3 lead.
- Zoe Kaplan interrupted St. Mary's College's run with her third of the season but the Seahawks responded right away with three straight to claim a 9-4 advantage with 14:16 left in the game.

- SMCM edged the Mustangs, 25-24, in shots while registering an 18-16 margin in ground balls.
- St. Mary's College dominated the draw control with a 13-4 advantage as junior defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) led the way with a season-best seven draws.
- Stevenson was 3-for-8 on free position shots while the Seahawks went 1-for-5 as both goalies read the shots well.

- Elling finished the game with two goals and career-best two assists while Scala contributed two goals.
- First-year attacker Sarah Fitter (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) chipped in a career-best four points on a goal and career-high three assists.
- Jaffurs and junior midfielder Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each notched three caused turnovers while Harrison and Fitter each scooped up three ground balls.
- Junior Alli Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) collected a season-best 12 saves and one ground ball.
Stevenson Newport Game Notes
- Ava Treakle and Hailey Johnson both scored twice to lead the Mustangs while Regan Torbert came up with 11 stops in Stevenson's second straight loss.
