ASHLAND, Va. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team fell short Wednesday night (Mar. 11) in non-conference action. St. Mary's College (1-5) dropped a 9-7 decision to host Randolph-Macon College (5-2) as its second-half rally ran out of time.
How It Happened
- Randolph-Macon opened the game with a 5-0 lead with 8:48 remaining in the first half. The Seahawks avoided the shutout right before halftime as junior attacker Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire Academy) found the back of the net with 1:52 to go in the second quarter.
- Junior midfielder Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) scored the first goal of the third frame to close the gap to 5-2 with 12:38 remaining in the third. The teams alternated the next four goals and the Seahawks headed into the final stanza down 7-4.
- After the Yellow Jackets notched the first goal of the fourth, SMCM tallied three of the next four goals to pull within 9-7 with 3:05 left in regulation.
- R-MC won the ensuing draw control, but junior defender Mira Broy (Parkton, Md./Hereford) caused a turnover right away. St. Mary's College transitioned the ball cleanly to the attack but turned it over with less than two minutes to go.
- This time, first-year defender Maura Brownlee (Baltimore, Md./Mercy) caused another host turnover and senior captain Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) was able to fire off a shot that was denied by Gillian Gladden with five seconds on the clock.

- The Seahawks edged Randolph-Macon, 20-19, in shots as well as a +4-turnover margin (13-17).
- Ground balls were equal at 19 apiece.
- The Yellow Jackets dominated the draw controls with a 13-5 margin.

- Senior captain Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) collected four draw controls while chipping in an assist and a caused turnover.

- Brooklyn Ricker paced the Yellow Jackets with three goals while Gladden finished with nine saves.
