ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Junior midfielder
Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) tallied a season-best four goals to lead the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team Saturday afternoon (Mar. 14) in non-conference action. St. Mary's College (1-6) squandered a three-goal fourth-quarter lead in falling 9-8 in overtime to Widener University (4-2).
How It Happened
- The Seahawks rolled out to a 3-0 lead following three goals in the final 6:12 of the first quarter. Senior captain Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), first-year attacker Sarah Fitter (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge), and sophomore midfielder Kayleigh Dragon (Milton, Ga./Milton) all found the back of the net.
- Each side scored a goal in the second period and SMCM headed into halftime with a 4-1 advantage. Claire Lynch put Widener on the scoreboard at 8:22 while Elling notched her first of the game 70 seconds later.
- The two teams went one-for-one in the third frame with the Pride and St. Mary's College each scoring three goals. The Seahawks maintained their three-goal cushion, going into the fourth with a 7-4 margin.
- After Widener tallied the first goal of the final quarter just 37 seconds in, Elling responded with her fourth of the game to keep SMCM at a three-goal advantage with 11:57 remaining in regulation.
- Lynch sparked a 3-0 run in the final 8:42 of regulation while back-to-back goals by Jessica Mantz knotted the game at 8-8 with 3:25 on the clock.
- St. Mary's College won the ensuing draw control but turned the ball over before getting its offense going. The Seahawk defense forced Widener into a shot clock violation and put together a successful clear, allowing SMCM to generate two shots by juniors Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire Academy) and Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales). Maurice's attempt hit the crossbar while Madison Warlow saved Harrison's shot to send the game into OT.
- Lynch netted the game-winning goal 79 seconds into the extra frame as the Pride were a woman-up.
Inside the Box Score
- St. Mary's College posted a 29-24 shot advantage while gaining a 22-17 margin in ground balls behind senior captain Gina Jaffurs' (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) career- and game-best five loose ball pickups.
- The Seahawks also edged Widener, 11-7, in draw controls as Scala and junior defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) each won three draws.
- SMCM struggled on eight-meter shots, scoring just one free-position goal in nine attempts.
