CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 13 goals Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 17) as first-year attacker
Sarah Fitter (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) put up a career-best four goals. St. Mary's College (1-7) dropped a 15-13 non-conference decision to host Washington College (5-2).
How It Happened
- After Washington College posted a 2-0 lead with 10:42 left in the first quarter, the Seahawks put together a 4-1 run behind four different scorers to claim a 4-3 advantage at the end of one. Senior captain Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) notched a goal and an assist in the run.
- The Shorewomen opened the second period with four unanswered goals to stake a 7-4 margin with 9:05 remaining in the half. SMCM tallied three of the next four scores to pull within one four minutes later. WC went into halftime with a 9-7 lead after Malery Andrews found the back of the net at 1:24.
- Washington College outscored St. Mary's College, 4-2, in the third frame to carry a 13-9 advantage into the final quarter as Piper Evans and Mac Grogan each scored twice.
- The Seahawks used another 4-1 run to close the gap to 14-13 with 3:02 left in the game. The Shorewomen gained a two-goal separation with a Grogan tally at 2:04.
- After WC won the ensuing draw control, junior goalie Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) turned away a free-position shot with 43 seconds to go. SMCM cleanly transitioned the ball down to the attack where sophomore attacker Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md./Gunston) fired off a shot which was stopped by Maddy Kissinger.

- Washington College outshot St. Mary's College, 37-27, and caused 14 of the Seahawks' 23 turnovers.
- The Shorewomen garnered a 25-20 margin in ground balls as well as a 16-14 edge in draw controls despite a season-high eight draws from senior captain Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales).
- WC went 2-for-6 on free-position shots while SMCM was 1-for-1.

- Senior captain Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) chipped in a goal and two assists plus three ground balls, two draw controls, and one caused turnover.
- Greeley notched a season-best 13 saves and two ground balls.

- Evans led all scorers with seven points on six goals and an assist while Kissinger posted eight stops.
