GRANTHAM, Pa. – In the midst of a three-game road trip, the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team took on No. 16 Messiah College Saturday afternoon (Mar. 21). Senior captain
Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) notched a career-best five goals as St. Mary's College (1-8) came up on the short end of a 15-9 loss at Messiah (4-4).
How It Happened
- Junior midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) gave the Seahawks the first lead of the game three minutes in off a pass from senior captain Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken). Messiah responded with three unanswered goals to claim a 3-1 advantage with 4:45 to go in the first quarter.
- SMCM scored twice in less than a minute to level the contest at 3-3 with 2:51 left in the first period. The Falcons tallied the final goal of the frame to take a one-goal lead into the next quarter.
- Messiah tacked on three more to start the second period before back-to-back goals from Scala made it 7-5 in favor of the hosts with 1:33 remaining in the half. Hayley Lettinga sent the Falcons into halftime with a three-goal cushion.
- Elling once again scored the first goal of the half to cut the lead to two less than two minutes into the third quarter. Messiah pulled away with a 7-1 run to stake a 15-7 margin with 3:431remaining in the game.
- Scala netted the final two goals of the game at 3:11 and 1:12 for the 15-9 final.

- Messiah posted a 38-27 shot advantage while turnovers were equal at 17 apiece.
- The Falcons gained a 24-15 margin in ground balls while draw controls were even with each team winning 13.
- St. Mary's College scored a season-best three free-position goals on four attempts while the hosts went 3-for-6.
