SMCM Women’s Lacrosse Dominant in Conference-Opening Win

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack Saturday afternoon (March 28) to open United East Conference action with a bang. St. Mary's College (2-8, 1-0 UEC) snapped a four-game skid with a 17-2 league road win over Wilson College (1-9, 0-1 UEC) as three Seahawks tallied four points on two goals and two assists.
 
How It Happened
  • SMCM rolled out of the gate with 12 unanswered goals for a 12-0 lead with 11:44 remaining in the third quarter. Wilson avoided the shutout three minutes later.
  • St. Mary's College closed out the game on a 5-2 run, including two goals from first-year attacker Sarah Fitter (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge).

  • The Seahawks outshot Wilson, 33-7, while gaining a 16-11 edge in ground balls.
  • SMCM had a chokehold on draw controls with a 17-3 margin as senior captain Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) collected a game-best six draws and junior midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) added four.

  • Scala, Fitter, and junior attacker Grace Maurice (Clinton, Conn./Cheshire) all finished with two goals and two assists while first-year midfielder Brooke Meisner (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) notched the first points of her career on two goals and an assist.
  • Scala and senior captain Carsyn Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) led the defensive effort with two ground balls and two caused turnovers each.
  • Junior goalie Allie Greeley (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) started the first half and finished with four saves. First-year Lillian Gunder (Perkiomenville, Pa./Perkiomen) started the second half and made one stop.

  • Kaelynn Goff turned away five Seahawk shots in the second straight loss for the Phoenix.
