HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team played four matches down in Hilton Head, S.C. over Spring Break, going 2-2 between March 17-19. St. Mary's College (3-5) earned a pair of 4-3 wins over Stevenson University (Mar. 18) and Ripon College (Mar. 19) while being shut out by St. Ambrose University (Mar. 17) and falling 6-1 to Schreiner University (Mar. 19).
HOW IT HAPPENED
ST. AMBROSE
- Senior captain Max Esztergomi (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) highlighted the Seahawks' match with the St. Ambrose as Esztergomi captured eight games in his match at No. 1 singles against Sebastian Arevalo, falling 3-6, 5-7 in SMCM's 7-0 loss to the Fighting Bees.
STEVENSON
- Junior Andrew Hand (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) won the decisive match at No. 5 singles to give St. Mary's College the 4-3 triumph over Stevenson. Hand went the distance as he tallied a 7-6 (7-3) win in the first set before rallying with a 13-11 triumph in the tiebreak after falling 3-6 in the second set.
- The Seahawks headed into singles action with a 1-0 lead after capturing two of the three doubles matches. Ezstergomi and first-year Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) earned a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles while Hand and sophomore Dyland Courtney (Chaptico, Md./Chopticon) posted a 7-5 triumph at the third flight.
- Stevenson grabbed a 2-1 lead with wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles before sophomore captain Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) leveled the match with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles over Christian Coulson.
- The Mustangs went back on top, 3-2, as Luke Appleman notched a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Esztergomi at No. 1 singles.
- Sophomore Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) evened the match once again with a 6-4, 6-3 win over King Nacua at No. 2 singles.
SCHREINER
- Cron notched the lone point for SMCM as he posted a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (10-7) win at No. 2 singles over Noah Salas in the team's 6-1 loss to Schreiner.
RIPON
- It was another nailbiter in the Spring Break finale with Ripon. This time, first-year Nate Willoughby (Edgewater, Md./South River) proved to be the hero as Willoughby claimed a 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 10-4 win over Ryan Richter at No. 4 singles to give St. Mary's College the 4-3 victory.
- Ripon won two of three doubles, taking No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to head into singles action with a 1-0 lead.
- Nelson (No. 1 singles), Lyman (No. 3 singles), and Cron (No. 2 singles) all won their matches in straight sets to give the Seahawks a 3-1 advantage.
- The Red Hawks responded with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to knot the match at 3-3.
