READING, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team posted their fifth consecutive 7-0 victory Saturday afternoon (April 11). St. Mary's College (8-5, 5-0 UEC) shut out Penn State Berks (5-5, 3-3 UEC) as the Seahawks have blanked all five conference opponents this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
- Senior captain Max Esztergomi (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and first-year Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) tallied a 6-3 win over Donovan Sullivan and Joseph Martin at No. 2.
- Graduate Joey Carson (Sykesville, Md./Century) and junior Andrew Hand (Huntington, Md./Huntington) notched a 6-3 victory at No. 3 to help SMCM lock up the doubles point and go into singles action with a 1-0 lead.
- Sophomores Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) came up a 6-2 triumph over Talan Nguyen and Jazae Maina-Itegi at No. 1 to wrap up doubles play.
SINGLES
- Straight set wins by Esztergomi (No. 1) and Nelson (No. 2) pushed the lead to 3-0.
- Cron battled at No. 3 to clinch the match for St. Mary's College with a 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-4 triumph over Sullivan.
- Lyman outlasted Martin for a 6-1, 7-6 (2) victory at No. 4.
- Hand (No. 5) and first-year Nate Willoughby (Edgewater, Md./South River) at No. 6 picked up straight set victories to close out the match.
