ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team saw their six-match win streak end Tuesday afternoon (April 14). St. Mary's College (8-6, 5-1 UEC) suffered its first United East Conference loss of the season, falling 5-2 to Penn State Harrisburg (9-6, 7-0 UEC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
- Harrisburg's Damir Cuturic and Cooper Wheeler opened with a 6-0 victory over sophomores Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) at the No. 1 spot.
- Colin Flack and Ved Pawar then took down senior captain Max Esztergomi (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and first-year Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford), 6-2, at the No. 2 pairing to clinch the doubles one to send the Lions into singles action with a 1-0 lead.
- Junior Andrew Hand (Huntington, Md./Huntington) and first-year Nate Willoughby (Edgewater, Md./South River) wrapped up doubles action with a 6-1 victory over Andrew Lines and Ian Optiz at the third flight.
SINGLES
- Straight set wins by Wheeler (No. 1), Pawar (No. 2), and Cuturic (No. 3) pushed Harrisburg's lead to 4-0 as Cuturic clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Cron at the No. 3 spot.
- Lyman put the Seahawks on the scoreboard with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Optiz at No. 4 singles.
- Willoughby made it a 4-2 match with his 6-2, 6-3 win over John McCarthy at the No. 6 spot.
- Flack closed out the match for the Lions with a thrilling 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 10-5 triumph over Hand at No. 5 singles.
