SMCM Women’s Lacrosse Blanks Notre Dame (Md.) on Senior Day

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack to pick up their second straight win Saturday afternoon (April 11). St. Mary's College (4-9, 3-0 UEC) shut out Notre Dame of Maryland University (0-9, 0-2 UEC), 25-0, to make it a memorable Senior Day.
 
Prior to the game, senior captains Gina Jaffurs (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken), Katelin Scala (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales), and Carsyn Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) were honored for their years of dedication and leadership.
 
How It Happened
  • The Seahawks rolled to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter of play before taking a 15-0 advantage into halftime.
  • SMCM wrapped up the game by scoring five goals in each of the third and fourth quarters.

Inside the Box Score
  • St. Mary's College outshot the Gators, 42-2, while the Seahawk defense caused 12 of NDMU's 22 turnovers.
  • SMCM posted a 20-9 advantage in ground balls as well as a 23-4 margin in draw controls.

  • Jaffurs tallied career-bests of seven points, five assists, three caused turnovers, and two goals while adding three ground balls and three draw controls.
  • Scala and first-year attacker Sarah Fitter (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) both contributed three goals and three assists. For Fitter, she notched career-bests in assists and points (6).
  • Scala also grabbed a season-best 10 draw controls plus one ground ball and one caused turnover.
  • Junior midfielder Hope Harrison (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) chipped in three goals and an assist along with three draws.
  • Junior midfielder Sanne Elling (Ocean View, Del./Sussex) tallied her fourth hat trick of the season with three goals while winning two draw controls.
  • Junior defender Claire Boudreau (Towson, Md./Towson) paced the defense with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • First-year Lillian Gunder (Perkiomenville, Pa./Perkiomen) made one save as Gunder started and played the entire second half.
 
Notre Dame Game Notes
  • Leah Hasberry had seven stops between the pipes for Notre Dame.
