Seahawks Women’s Tennis Locks Up No. 1 Seed with Undefeated Season

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's tennis team clinched the No. 1 seed in the upcoming United East Conference Women's Tennis Championship Tournament by ending the regular season with an undefeated conference record. St. Mary's College (12-4, 9-0 UEC) notched its ninth consecutive victory with a 7-0 shutout of Penn State Abington (3-12, 2-7 UEC).
 
As the No. 1 seed, the Seahawks have earned byes for the play-in round (April 22) and the first round (April 25). SMCM will host the winner of No. 4 seed Cairn University and No. 5 seed Lancaster Bible in the semifinals on April 28 at the Somerset Tennis Complex at a time to be determined.
 
St. Mary's College finished the regular season with seven shutouts, including dropping only two points during league action. This is the Seahawks' fourth undefeated conference record since joining the United East for the 2021-22 season. In five seasons as a United East member, SMCM owns a 31-1 mark.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
  • Abington came into the match short a player, so St. Mary's College claimed No. 3 doubles by default.
  • First-years Lily Ganjbaksh (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Addyson Harden (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) posted a 6-0 win over Sevara Tursunboeva and Soniyah Youngblood at the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point.
  • Sophomores Sarah Levit (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) and Lily Spedden (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge South Dorchester) closed doubles action with a 6-0 victory over Mia Hammoudi and Alyssa Thompson.
 
SINGLES
  • The Seahawks went up 2-0, earning the win by default at the No. 6 spot.
  • SMCM proceeded to drop only two games over the remaining five single matches.
  • Levit clinched the match with her 6-0, 6-2 win over Youngblood at the No. 2 spot.
