Penn State Abington Sweeps Doubleheader from St. Mary’s

JENKINTOWN, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team jumped out to an early lead in game one but was unable to hold off a late push as Penn State Abington baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep over the Seahawks on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park. St. Mary's fell 13-7 in the opener before dropping game two, 11-1.

Game 1: Penn State Abington 13, St. Mary's 7

The Seahawks (8-16, 4-6 UEC) showed offensive firepower early, erupting for six runs in the third inning to erase a 4-0 deficit and take a 6-4 lead.

A combination of patience and timely hitting fueled the rally. Aaron Wathen drew an RBI walk before Layne Lesko delivered a two-run double. Corey Brown and Kody Adkins followed with RBI singles to cap the inning.

St. Mary's added another run in the seventh on Brown's second RBI single of the game, trimming the deficit to 7-6 at the time, but the Nittany Lions (26-10, 9-4 UEC) responded decisively.

Penn State Abington plated four runs in the bottom of the seventh and added two more in the eighth to pull away. John Busco led the offensive charge, going 2-for-3 with five runs scored and a home run, while Benjamin Gagnon drove in three runs with a pair of doubles.

The Seahawks totaled 14 hits in the contest, led by Eli Shafer's 3-for-5 effort. Wathen, Lesko, Brown, and Adkins each recorded multi-hit games.

Game 2: Penn State Abington 11, St. Mary's 1

In the nightcap, St. Mary's (8-17) struggled to generate offense outside of a solo home run by DJ Sifford, falling 11-1 in seven innings.

Penn State Abington broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the second before Sifford's blast in the fourth cut the deficit to 2-1.

The game remained tight until the sixth inning when the Nittany Lions erupted for five runs, capitalizing on a mix of hits and defensive miscues. They added four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Nathan Schurga paced the Abington offense with three hits and two RBIs, while Akira Nakamura drove in four runs. Jack Wright earned the complete-game victory, limiting the Seahawks to one run on eight hits.

Eli Shafer again led St. Mary's at the plate with two hits, while Corey Brown and Kyle Catanzaro each added doubles.

St. Mary's will look to bounce back as it continues United East Conference play in its next outing on Tuesday, April 21st when the Seahawks travel to Wilson College for a single game.
