Penn State Harrisburg Uses Big Middle Innings to Top St. Mary’s, 14-4

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team dropped a United East Conference contest to Penn State Harrisburg, 14-4, on Thursday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest.

Penn State Harrisburg (16-9, 5-0 UEC) broke the game open with a pair of big innings, scoring five runs in the third and four more in the fourth to take early control. St. Mary's (7-12, 4-1 UEC) was unable to recover despite a late push.

The Seahawks collected 10 hits in the contest, led by a pair of hits from Aaron Wathen, while Michael Hagan and Kaden Hnath each drove in a run during a three-run seventh inning.

After two scoreless frames to open the game, Penn State Harrisburg surged ahead in the third, stringing together timely hits highlighted by a two-RBI single from Demetre Koutras III and an RBI double from Matthew Johansen. The visitors continued their offensive pressure in the fourth, capitalizing on walks and defensive miscues to extend the lead to 9-0.

The Lions added three more runs in the sixth to push the advantage to 12-0 before St. Mary's got on the board. In the bottom of the sixth, Wathen delivered an RBI single to plate Rhett Fletcher.

The Seahawks showed life in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on RBI doubles from Hagan and Hnath, along with a run scoring on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 12-4. However, Penn State Harrisburg answered with two runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Colin Patterson (2-1) took the loss for St. Mary's, allowing five runs over two innings of work. Parker Zook (1-0) earned the win for Penn State Harrisburg, tossing five shutout innings while allowing five hits.

St. Mary's returns to action this weekend as the Seahawks continue United East Conference play with a Saturday doubleheader vs. Keystone College
