ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. — The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team split a high-scoring doubleheader with Penn State Brandywine on Senior Day Friday afternoon at the Hawk's Nest, walking off with a 7-6 victory in game one before settling for an 8-8 tie in the nightcap.
The Seahawks move to 10-18-1 overall and 6-7-1 in United East Conference play.
GAME ONE: St. Mary's (Md.) 7, Penn St. Brandywine 6
St. Mary's used a fast start and late-inning heroics to claim the opener in walk-off fashion.
The Seahawks jumped out early with three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Connor Wilkerson. St. Mary's added two more in the second as Wilkerson delivered again and Aaron Wathen drove in a run to make it 5-0.
Penn State Brandywine battled back, scoring once in the third before erupting for five runs in the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.
The Seahawks chipped away, tying the game in the sixth on an RBI single from Rhett Fletcher. In the bottom of the ninth, St. Mary's loaded the bases and Wathen delivered the game-winner on a fielder's choice, scoring Eli Shafer for the walk-off victory.
Wilkerson paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Fletcher added three hits. Wathen finished with two RBIs, including the game-winner.
On the mound, Adam Ferony earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning in relief.
GAME TWO: St. Mary's (Md.) 8, Penn St. Brandywine 8
The nightcap turned into another offensive battle, ultimately ending in a tie after six innings.
Penn State Brandywine struck early with four runs in the first and added four more in the third to take an 8-2 lead.
St. Mary's responded in the fourth inning, plating four runs to cut the deficit to 8-6. Corey Brown, Will Wilson, and Eli Shafer each delivered RBI hits in the frame.
The Seahawks completed the comeback in the sixth, as DJ Sifford lined a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 8-8.
Wilson led the offense in game two, going 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two doubles, while Shafer and Wathen each recorded two hits. Sifford added two RBIs in the tying rally.
Cam Gill provided strong relief out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings to keep St. Mary's within striking distance.
The Seahawks will await their opponent for the first round of the United East playoffs on Tuesday, April 28th
