SMCM Men’s Lacrosse Cruises into United East Championship Game

Martel Becomes Program’s All-Time Goals Leader

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Senior captain Joshua Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) scored six goals as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team dominated Cairn University in the 2026 United East Conference Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament Semifinals with a decisive 27-1 victory at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium on Wednesday (April 29).
 
No. 1 seed St. Mary's College (11-7) outshot the fourth-seeded Highlanders (2-9), 62-13, won 23-of-31 faceoffs, and collected 49 ground balls.
 
The Seahawks will now face No. 2 seed Penn College (14-4), a 29-6 winner over No. 3 seed University of Pittsburgh-Bradford, in Saturday's championship game at the Jamie L. Roberts Stadium at 12 pm. Tickets will be $6 for adults and $3 for senior citizens and children.
 
Martel became the school's all-time leader in goals with his six-goal performance, surpassing Aiden Doyle '25 mark of 155 goals. The 5-8 attackman entered today's game needing five goals to break the record, which now stands at 157.
 
FIRST QUARTER
- Sophomore midfielder Gavin Phipps (Mayo, Md./South River) opened the scoring, followed by goals from senior Gavin McKay (Urbana, Md./Urbana) and Martel, quickly establishing a lead.
- Martel was prolific, scoring multiple goals with assists from teammates like junior defensive midfielder Jackson Pailthorp (Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) and senior attackman Liam McNulty (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park).
- SMCM concluded the quarter with a commanding 13-0 lead.
 
SECOND QUARTER
- Sophomore attackman Mike Machiran (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) opened the quarter with a goal assisted by first-year attackman Jack Reiter (Damascus, Md./Damascus), marking his fifth of the season.
- First-year midfielder RJ Cusson (Towson, Md./Loyola Blakefield) followed with a goal, assisted by Machiran, extending the lead early in the quarter.
- Sophomore attackman Charlie Reid (Catonsville, Md./Glenelg Country) scored a man-up goal with assistance from junior attackman Quinn McLaughlin (Fallston, Md./Fallston), continuing the scoring run.
- First-year midfielder Drew Sullivan (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) notched two goals in the quarter, both assisted by Reiter, as the home side led 20-1 at the end of the second quarter.
 
THIRD QUARTER
- Sullivan opened the scoring with a goal assisted by Reiter at 11:33, extending the lead.
- Machiran and first-year midfielder Sam Duch (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) each added goals, with assists from Sullivan and Reid, respectively, further increasing the margin.
- Reiter and first-year midfielder Matthew Martel (Linthicum, Md./North County) added goals, with Martel's score assisted by Reiter, bringing the score to 26-1 at the end of the third quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
- Cairn began the final quarter with a successful faceoff, though their offensive efforts were thwarted by wide shots and turnovers.
- Senior captain Adam Martin (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island) extended the lead for the Seahawks with a goal at 1:20, assisted by Reiter, marking his first goal of the season.
 
St. Mary's College Game Notes
- Reiter quarterbacked the St. Mary's College offense with a career-best six assists while adding a career-high two goals to finish with a career-best eight points.
- Martel matched his season-best of seven points as he put up a career-best six goals and handed out one assist.
- Sullivan tallied his first career points as a Seahawk, scoring three goals and dishing out three assists.
- Senior Matteo Ciccarello (Crofton, Md./Arundel) controlled the faceoff circle by winning 22 of 28 faceoffs and collecting 18 ground balls.
 
Cairn Game Notes
- Adain Holliday led the Highlanders in ground balls with eight while Daniel Lafferty secured eight saves.
- Cole Heffler scored Cairn's lone goal and chipped in three ground balls.
