LANCASTER, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's tennis team picked up their fourth consecutive 7-0 victory Wednesday afternoon (April 8). St. Mary's College (7-5, 4-0 UEC) blanked Lancaster Bible College (1-7, 1-3 UEC) in United East Conference action for its fifth straight win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DOUBLES
- Senior captain Max Esztergomi (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and first-year Aidan Cron (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) started doubles action with a 6-1 win over Nas Joy and Jon Breinich at No. 2 doubles.
- Next came sophomores Alex Lyman (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) and Jacob Nelson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) with a 6-1 victory over Cole Stoltzfus and Cole Sheihing at No. 1 doubles.
- Junior Andrew Hand (Huntington, Md./Huntington) and first-year Nate Willoughby (Edgewater, Md./South River) concluded doubles play with a 6-4 triumph over Cameron Tripp and Hemberth Pena at No. 3 doubles.
- Since the Seahawks won all three doubles matches, SMCM headed into singles action with a 1-0 lead.
SINGLES
- Nelson (No. 2) won 6-1, 6-1 while Esztergomi (No. 1) needed three sets for a win as he went 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 for a 3-0 lead.
- Cron clinched the match for SMCM with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles over Joy.
- Lyman notched a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tripp at No. 4 singles.
- Hand earned a 6-4 win in the first set and was up 1-0 in the second at No. 5 singles before Breinich retired.
- Willoughby closed out the match with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Pena in the final flight.
