ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team picked up their first shutout victory of the season Saturday afternoon (Sept. 12). St. Mary's College (3-2) blanked Baruch College (0-3), 3-0, on the first day of the Seahawk Classic.
How It Happened
- It was a back-and-forth battle between the Seahawks and Baruch in the first half with the Bearcats edging the hosts, 8-6, in shots.
- Sophomore forward Matthew Kuwik (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) put SMCM on the board in the 21st minute. Kuwik received a long pass from junior midfielder Zach Blaum (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and then bent a shot around the Baruch defense just inside the far post.
- The Bearcats locked it down until the 72nd minute when junior forward Nick Haney (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Northern) corralled a long pass from sophomore midfielder Marco Mazzola (Pasadena, Md./Spalding) and then battled two Baruch defenders, splitting them before slipping it past Zaid Mohamed into the lower right corner.
- Blaum notched a goal of his own in the 87th minute, knocking in a cross from senior forward Franco Reyes (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair).

- St. Mary's College tallied a narrow 20-17 shot advantage, including a 7-5 margin in shots on goal.
- Corner kicks ended up equal as each side registered six.

- Blaum paced the Seahawks with six shots (two on target) on his way to a goal and an assist.
- Senior captain Zack Reed (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) made five saves in recording his first shutout of the season.
Baruch
- Klaidi Shaho and Anthony Prado paced the Bearcats with three shots each. All of Shaho's shots were on target.
- Dzmitry Piatrashka earned the start and made one save in the first half. Mohamed relieved Piatrashka to start the second half and finished with three stops.
