SALEM, Va. - The Seahawks closed out the Maroon Classic with a pair of victories Saturday, rallying past Methodist University, 3-1, before defeating Brevard College, 3-1, at the Cregger Center. St Mary's finished the weekend with a 2-2 record.
St. Mary's opened Saturday with a comeback victory over Methodist, overcoming an opening-set loss to win three straight sets. After falling 25-18 in the first, the Seahawks battled through a pair of 25-23 victories before closing out the match with a 25-18 fourth-set win.
Maya Mauro led the Seahawks with 18 kills and 20 digs for a double-double, while
Erienna Mendieta added 12 kills and
Vlada Costenco contributed 10 kills.
Camilla Galeano paced the offense with 27 assists, while
Elizabeth Childs and
Mauro led the defensive effort with 13 and 20 digs, respectively.
The Seahawks carried that strong play into their final match of the weekend against Brevard, earning another 3-1 victory. Brevard claimed the opening set, 26-24, but St. Mary's responded by taking the next three sets, 25-16, 25-13, and 25-23, to close out the tournament with a win.
Hope Parish powered the Seahawks with a team-high 16 kills while hitting .433.
Mauro added 15 kills and seven digs, while
Mendieta contributed 10 kills while hitting .412.
Julia Bobrowski recorded seven kills and seven digs, and
Sanaa Porter chipped in six kills while hitting .333.
With two victories, St. Mary's improves to 4-4 on the season and closes the Maroon Classic on a two-match winning streak. The Seahawks return to action Thursday, September 17, in Chestertown, MD as they take on Washington College.
