St. Mary’s College Field Hockey Topped by No. 2 Salisbury in Overtime

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – For the first time in the 32-year series history, the St. Mary's College of Maryland field hockey team forced nationally-ranked Salisbury University into overtime. St. Mary's College (3-4) came up short of an upset victory Saturday afternoon (Sept. 26), falling 1-0 in overtime to No. 2 Salisbury (6-1) on a penalty stroke 3:13 into the first extra frame.

How It Happened
  • Following 60 minutes of scoreless action in regulation, the Seahawks and Salisbury headed into the first of two sudden-victory 10-minute overtime periods.
  • The Sea Gulls drew a penalty corner at 62:55 and in the ensuing play, a penalty stroke was called for an intentional defensive foul in the circle. Devon Gregory stepped up to the penalty spot, seven yards from the goal, and finished a low shot into the bottom right corner to return SU to the win column.
  • SMCM took its only two shots of the game in the first quarter with sophomore forward Josie Mascolo (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) testing Maddie Castaneda at 9:07. A shot by sophomore midfielder Julie Presgraves (Frederick, Md./Frederick) was blocked 34 seconds later.
